Short vowel sounds list9/2/2023 Once you've worked through one list of words, be sure to move onto the next one and then mix the words up, having your child read words from different lists. Talking about language and words is great! This also opens up an opportunity to discuss what are and aren't 'real' words. Examples of words containing this /i:/ sound are bee, need, machine, kerosene, sea, receive, we, these, seize, be, free, tree, ceiling, glee, margarine, Peter. For example, when you read the word "cab" with your child, you can start rhyming with words (real or not) like dab, fab, gab, hab, and so on. If you see a word on the list, come up with as many words that rhyme as you can. This is a great way to work on rhyming skills as well. Short vowels refer to those vowels which follow the CVC pattern, i.e. Some of the words in this section include: row, home, snow, code, goat. You'll see lots of shorter three letter words, so have your child come up with longer words. Vowels are a, e, i, o, and u, whereas the rest of the alphabets are consonants. Students will learn about words that have a long-O vowel sound with these worksheets. Spend some time trying to come up with words that may not be included on the list or even get silly and make up new words that use the correct sound. Do this for several words, using several short vowel sounds. Print a CVC word on a piece of paper, with a picture of the word on the other side. It is the same as the soft A sound that you hear in jaw and father. Once a child has mastered other short vowel sounds, encourage them to identify the vowel used in common words. Start with just one vowel, and work your way through the list, saying each word and really stressing the sound of the vowel. In American English, the short O sound is pronounced as a lax mid-back rounded vowel. For starters, go over the different words with your child.
